Check the network before starting setup
Have the exact Wi-Fi name and password ready. Place the printer near the router for setup and connect the setup computer or phone to the intended private network.
Check the printer specifications for supported Wi-Fi bands. Some models use 2.4 GHz; others also support 5 GHz. Select a band the printer supports. A similar network name does not confirm compatibility. HP’s Wi-Fi setup troubleshooting guide covers unsupported-network and discovery errors.
Use a network that allows devices to communicate
A guest, hotel, or campus network may isolate devices even when they can access the internet. That can prevent a computer from discovering a printer. Ask the network administrator which printing method to use.
HP explains router isolation and printer discovery. Where a shared network cannot provide a usable connection, check your model’s Wi-Fi Direct or USB options.
Connect with the method your printer supports
- HP app: use HP’s setup portal to obtain the appropriate app, add your printer, and follow its connection prompts. HP is replacing HP Smart with the HP app; the software offered depends on your device.
- Touchscreen setup: if your model has a Wireless Setup Wizard, open its network or wireless settings, choose the intended network, and enter its password.
Use the HP Wi-Fi network setup guide and your model manual for exact controls. Printer menus vary; a button sequence for one family may not apply to another.
If the app cannot find the printer, check setup mode
Many HP printers use a temporary Wi-Fi setup mode when accepting a new connection. HP describes a two-hour setup window for many models. If that window has ended, follow HP’s model-specific Wi-Fi setup-mode instructions, then return to the app.
Restoring wireless setup can remove the saved network connection. Have the network details ready and use the procedure listed for your printer. An unrelated factory reset is not the next step for a simple discovery problem.
Reconnect after changing your router or Wi-Fi password
A printer that still has the old network details cannot join the replacement network. Run its supported wireless setup method and select the new network. Use the setup-mode instructions if the app needs to discover it again.
Once connected, check the printer from each computer that uses it. If it appears offline, work through our HP printer offline checks before sending repeated print jobs.
If the network is correct but discovery still fails
Check the HP app’s requested local-network, Bluetooth, and location permissions. These can affect discovery. A VPN may also interfere; ask your administrator before changing a work-managed device. Restore a personal VPN afterward if you temporarily pause it for setup.
Retry near the router, note the exact error, and follow HP’s wireless connection troubleshooting guide.
Confirm printing from the computer you will use
In Windows 11, use Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners to add the connected printer. On a Mac, check System Settings → Printers & Scanners. Print one short document from that computer.
Follow our Windows and Mac setup guide, with the relevant Microsoft and Apple instructions. Confirm that the intended printer is selected before sending larger jobs.
Is Wi-Fi Direct the same as home Wi-Fi?
No. Wi-Fi Direct connects a compatible device directly to the printer without a router. It can be useful where a private network is unavailable, but it does not give the printer full network access for online features. Follow HP’s Wi-Fi Direct instructions for your model and device.

Common questions
Must every HP printer use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi?
No. Supported bands depend on the model. Check the printer specifications and select a supported network instead of assuming every HP printer has the same requirements.
Why did my HP printer stop connecting after a router change?
It may still have the previous network name or password. Reconnect it using the wireless setup method for that model, then check it from your computer.
Does seeing a DIRECT-HP network mean the printer joined my router?
No. A Wi-Fi Direct name identifies a direct printer connection. Check the printer’s network status to confirm whether it has also joined your home or office network.
