Describe what happens when you select Print
Choose the symptom that matches what you see:
- The printer says offline: begin with the offline-printer connection checks.
- The job waits in the queue: inspect the queue and the printer’s current message.
- The job never appears: check the printer selected in the app.
- Paper comes out blank or faded: use the output-quality checks below.
Keep the exact error wording. A useful request for help includes the symptom, model, connection type, and whether any other document or device can print.
Check what the printer can do on its own
Look for a paper, cartridge, or other error on the printer before sending more jobs. If your model supports a built-in status or diagnostic report, follow its manual to print that report directly from the device.
HP provides different report procedures for different families, including OfficeJet Pro 9010 and 9020 and selected Smart Tank models. These are examples, not universal button sequences.
Interpret the result carefully: a successful built-in report is a reason to investigate the computer-to-printer path next. A failed or poor-quality report is a reason to follow the printer’s own error or print-quality guidance. Neither result alone identifies a particular failed part.
Check the queue and send one test
Windows 11: open Settings β Bluetooth & devices β Printers & scanners and select the intended printer. For a Windows test page, open Printer properties, then use Print Test Page on the General tab. Microsoft explains this check in its app-printing troubleshooting guidance.
Mac: open Print Center and inspect the intended printer’s queue. Resume paused printing after resolving any printer error, or remove an individual failed job that is blocking later work. Apple’s Print Center guide explains these controls.
Keep the source documents before canceling jobs, and coordinate changes on a shared printer. Repeatedly submitting the same document makes it harder to tell which attempt produced the result.
If only one file or app will not print
Try another small file in the same application, then a simple document in another app. Microsoft suggests this comparison to identify an application-specific problem. Review the printer choice, page range, paper size, and whether a PDF or file destination was selected.
If the test page prints but the original document does not, focus your next investigation on that document and application. Note the app name and any message it displays. Follow Microsoft’s app-specific checks or Apple’s printing guidance before making wider changes.
If the HP printer produces blank or faded pages
Check that the document contains printable content and review the printer’s supply messages. HP distinguishes inkjet and LaserJet print-quality procedures; a cleaning routine or cartridge step for one model is not an instruction for every printer.
Use HP’s blank-page guidance and the support page for your exact model to choose the relevant settings, diagnostic report, or maintenance procedure. Avoid replacing several parts based only on the phrase ‘not printing.’ Record whether the printer’s own report has the same defect as the computer document.
Choose the next step from the evidence
If Windows does not recognize a USB printer, check the cable and try another port as described in Microsoft’s detection guidance. If the problem concerns software, use our HP printer setup and official software guidance to identify the correct model and operating system.

Common questions
Why will my HP printer print a test page but not my document?
A successful test page suggests checking the document and app next. Try another file, confirm the selected printer and page range, and note whether the problem happens in more than one application.
Does a full ink indicator prove the printer should print correctly?
A supply indicator is only one observation. Compare the document with a model-specific diagnostic report and follow HP's guidance for any missing text, faded output, or blank pages.
When should I ask HP about a repair?
Use HP's official support for warranty decisions, persistent hardware messages, or repair options. Have the printer model, exact error, and any diagnostic report available.
